Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Bros. 2 was originally not a Super Mario Bros. game. It was originally known as Doki Doki Panic in Japan, and starred different characters. Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan was a Famicom Disk System game that was Super Mario Bros. with different levels and a few new gameplay mechanics. Nintendo of America thought that American gamers would find Super Mario Bros. 2 too difficult, so they changed the graphics of Doki Doki Panic to Mario-themed graphics, including Mario characters, and inserted some Mario-themed music, and released it as Super Mario Bros. 2 in the United States and other Western countries. Western countries later got the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels in Super Mario All-Stars, and Japan got the Super Mario-ized version of Doki Doki Panic as Super Mario Bros. USA.

Super Mario Bros. 2 was so very much unlike the first game. When it first came out, it was a whole new experience. This was the first game that Princess Toadstool and Toad were playable, along with Mario and Luigi. Each of the four characters had their own abilities, and I always played as Luigi while my mom always played Princess Peach. This was the first game where I began to enjoy Luigi as a character more than Mario. The biggest changes though, was that it took place in a dream world called Sub-Con instead of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the baddie in this game wasn’t King Koopa, it was a giant toad named Wart.

This is my mom’s favorite game in the series. She loved everything from the artwork in this game, the bizarre characters like the bouncing birds, and the beginning where the character drops down from the door. Most of all, she enjoyed the ending, as she found the animation of Mario very cute. And, I definitely have to agree with her there. I would love to see a sequel to this game. It would be fun to visit Sub-Con again, and to see what happened to Wart.
